Carina moves forward on a road paved with our values

Posted by Yoko Kuramoto-Eidsmoe

Frontline care professionals and individuals and families needing care faced immense challenges over the past year, juggling concerns about safety with supporting themselves and their loved ones.

In response, Carina expanded to help more people find home care (with Medicaid or with other payment sources), connect more care professionals to good work and began to provide child care matching.

Although things were moving at rapid speed, it was more important than ever to reflect inwardly on who we are and how we can best serve you. As we move into 2021, we want to take a moment to share our updated mission, vision and values.

Yes, you read that right: We now provide matching services for families seeking child care and folks who need a home care aide outside of the Medicaid system. And all care professionals are licensed and verified when they join Carina so you will always be connected to safe, reliable providers.

Who we are: Carina provides a safe, easy-to-use, care-matching service that connects families and individuals who need home care and child care with care professionals looking for good jobs and steady work. Together with labor unions, government agencies and community partners, we bring good jobs to care providers, so they can focus on their passion — caring for others.

Providing a great service is important to us. But we are equally committed to answering the questions, “Why are we doing it this way?” and “How are we helping to create a better world?” For too long in this country, people who need care and those who provide it have been isolated, underserved and undervalued. We have a vision of what success looks like and we’d like to share it with you.

Our vision is a care economy that strengthens our communities by respecting and supporting workers, families and people who need care.

Our mission is to build online tools to bring good jobs to care workers, so they can provide the best possible care for those who need it.

Our values are:

  • Partnership: We are in this together. Providing good care to children, older adults and people with disabilities is a team effort.
  • Trust: We do the right thing.
  • Empathy: Our users are always on our minds.
  • Equity:  We build tools for people who are most often left out of today’s technology solutions.
  • Self Determination: Quality care and economic justice depend on your ability to have good options for care and work.

These values guide every aspect of our work.

One example is the words we choose: We sometimes refer to care providers or caregivers, and those are both fine terms. The term we prefer, though, is care professionals, because it recognizes the training and dedication it takes to do this work.

Similarly, while it’s OK to talk about clients, we prefer to talk about individuals and families who need care. We want you to always be assured that we aren’t thinking of those who need care as just some abstract group: We know that each of you is a person like us, in a family like ours.

At Carina, we see our work as a partnership with care professionals, individuals and families that need care, and the community partners who are working to improve the overall care system. In the upcoming months, we’ll be updating our website to make it easier to find what you need and also learn more about Carina as an organization.

We are always looking to hear from you about Carina. Send us a note at with questions or thoughts.

P.S. if you haven’t yet, check out our child care matching service here and spread the word. 🙂
